BigMo adoptor in Bayawan wins DOST-FNRI award
A farmer’s group in Bayawan City is the latest recipient of KABALIKAT innovation award. From the Department of Science and Tech.-Food and also Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) in a ceremony held in Makati City recently.
The Nangka Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Farmers’ Association (NABEFA), received the innovation award in the small-scale category during the awarding rite held on July 27, 2018 at the Dusit Thani Manila Hotel, Ayala Center, Makati City.
KABALIKAT is an acronym for Kabalikat ng Lipunan sa Kalusugang pang-Nutrisyon at Teknolohiya. The award also aims to recognize outstanding technology adoptors. That produce matching food products for the feeding programs in (MRP) areas in partnership with DOST-FNRI and local government units.
NABEFA received a cash prize of P100,000 and a plaque of recognition. The association stands out this year as socially responsible partner for its small-scale inventions in formulating new products,which is also compliance with mandatory requirements. Lab analysis of products, as well as excellent management and marketing practices. Members have undergone various industry-related trainings including trainings on Good Manufacturing Practices and laboratory analysis.
As technology adopter, the firm produces innovated community-based Rice-Mongo (BigMo) complementary food blends and curls for the continuing feeding programs of the city government of Bayawan City and other private organizations in MRP areas where malnutrition is prevalent. NABEFA’s processing plant is located in Sitio Canalum, Brgy. Nangka.
NABEFA started off with a membership of 22 farmer-beneficiaries and has since increased its labor force to 81 members whose labor organization was later duly registered with the Department of Labor & Employment (DOLE).
With the acquisition of a lot for its place of business, NABEFA also received funding assistance from various government institutions for seed capital, construction of a processing facility and production equipment such as the curl extruder, mixer/tumbler, grinder and sealer.
